Books

Here is a short list of books I consider worth reading. I’ve seen plenty that are terrifying, some that are practical and others that are just downright depressing. I hope that you will find these, at the very least, useful, insightful, and well-researched.

“Speed and Scale: An Action Plan for Solving Our Climate Crisis Now” by John Doerr, in collaboration with Ryan Panchadsaram.

One of the best books I’ve read so far. A simplified plan. You can read my review here.

“Saving Us” by Katherine Kayhoe.

This is a book about communication and hope. Don’t know how to begin conversations or where to go with them once they’ve started? Here’s a way to approach climate with everyone, especially those who may disagree.

“How To Prepare for Climate Change: A Practical Guide to Surviving the Chaos” by David Pogue.

Written by a CBS Sunday Morning correspondent, this book has the “how to” feel that we are all craving with regard to climate. If you don’t know where to begin, start here.

“The New Climate War” by Michael Mann.

This is your real-life handbook explaining how we got here. Michael Mann is the pre-eminent climate scientist who brought us the hockey stick graph. He wound up in a swirl of controversy from those who were profiting from fossil fuels but he has been right and has stoically held his ground. He’ll help you understand the struggle between big money, power and politics vs. a finite planet. Buckle up. Truth is hard, but we still have a chance to make it better.

“The Water Will Come: Rising Seas, Sinking Cities, and the Remaking of the Civilized World” by Jeff Goodell.

This book was recommended by Tom Skilling, a prominent meteorologist in the Midwest and someone who has been discussing climate for years. It leaves no room for doubt that the coasts are rising, the description of how and when it will occur. As humans, we have a very unsettling problem.
